THE KEY POINTS

Experienced workers can ask Apeiro to assess relevant skills and previous training against a qualification. RPL requires evidence and assessment; where requirements are not yet met, further assessment or gap training may be needed. Experience alone does not guarantee a qualification.

Choose the qualification before collecting everything

Start with the work you do and the qualification you want to investigate. An assessor can explain which units and evidence are relevant so you do not gather unrelated or sensitive records unnecessarily.

Show your own contribution

Prepare examples that explain what you personally did, when and in which setting. Job titles, years of service and a general company portfolio do not by themselves demonstrate every competency requirement.

Separate RPL from credit transfer

RPL assesses relevant skills and knowledge. Credit transfer involves reviewing records of completed training for the relevant units. Provide the requested records and obtain a clear decision on each.

Understand any gaps and the next steps

Ask for the assessment process, costs, timeframes and any further evidence or training required. An individual plan should make clear what has been recognised and what remains to be completed.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR PATHWAY

Know the steps.
Make an informed start.

  1. Describe your experience

Share your role, work history and intended qualification.

  2. Confirm the evidence

Ask the assessor which records and demonstrations are needed.

  3. Review skills and gaps

Complete the assessment and clarify any further requirements.

  4. Agree the next steps

Review recognition outcomes, any training plan, fees and commitments.

PREPARE FOR THE CONVERSATION

Evidence to discuss with your assessor

Start with a short summary. The team can explain which further information is needed for your proposed arrangement.

Start the conversation
  • A work history or résumé describing relevant duties and dates.
  • Qualifications, transcripts and statements of attainment.
  • Task records, job sheets, reports or suitable work samples.
  • Photos or videos that show your own work, where permitted.
  • Employer or supervisor verification of relevant experience.
  • Explanations of the tools, systems and procedures you use.

Discuss evidence requirements first. Use approved submission channels and protect confidential information.

Questions that help.
Before you decide.

Explore practical questions about your pathway. Confirm the course, delivery, fees and individual requirements with Apeiro before enrolment.

Still have a question? Let’s talk

Your pathway questions

How much experience do I need for RPL?

There is no single experience period stated here for every qualification. Ask Apeiro about the relevant units and evidence. Any separate funded program may have additional eligibility conditions.

Will years in the industry guarantee recognition?

No. The assessor must determine whether the evidence demonstrates the required skills and knowledge. Length of employment alone does not establish competency.

Can overseas work experience be considered?

Describe your experience and provide available records. Ask what evidence and document requirements apply; relevant experience must still be assessed against the qualification requirements.

Can unpaid work or informal learning be discussed?

Yes. Explain the setting, tasks, supervision and your contribution. The assessor determines what evidence is relevant and sufficient; a type of experience is not automatically accepted or excluded by this guide.

Can I use confidential workplace records?

Ask what can be de-identified and obtain any necessary permissions before sharing. Do not send customer, client, health or commercially sensitive records through a general enquiry. Follow Apeiro’s approved evidence-submission instructions.

What if I have some skills but not the full qualification?

Ask the assessor to explain the gaps and any further learning or assessment needed. Partial recognition may inform an individual plan, but its effect on duration and fees must be confirmed.

Can I finish faster through RPL?

Recognition may affect an individual training plan, but a shortened completion time is not guaranteed. Request realistic assessment steps and timeframes before committing.

Is a trade pathway the same as general RPL?

RPL is an assessment process. A funded trade pathway is a separate program with its own availability and eligibility rules. Ask Apeiro whether a current opportunity applies to your qualification and circumstances.

Is RPL free or government funded?

Request the current assessment fees and ask separately about any funding that may apply. This page does not promise free assessment or a funded place.

What should I do before enrolling?

Tell Apeiro you want to discuss recognition, identify your intended qualification and request the assessment information. Obtain any recognition decision and its effect on your plan and fees before proceeding.
